I.Overview and purpose

 

Overview of Organizer

 

In May 2009, the school of agriculture and biology was jointly-run by both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture. It has shifted to a teaching and research school, and on its way to a research school. The school devotes three aspects: the Landscape Architecture, Agriculture Biotechnology, Food Science and Nutrition.  It has a lot of national or provincial labs and centers, with international cooperation partners from all over the world, as Cornell University, Purdue University, Technological University at Berlin and Tokyo University of Agriculture. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of universities, establishing major of landscape architecture.  The development of Landscape Architecture Department is supported by Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Construction. It has obtained lots of research and practicing achievement on landscape architecture planning and design, history and culture, urban ecological restoration, urban forests, germplasm engineering, introduction and cultivation of landscape plants.

 

Purpose

 

This package will provide an opportunity to carry out field investigations of Chinese traditional gardens in Suzhou, Hangzhou and the Shanghai area. Simultaneously, by way of literature review, students will learn about the history of Chinese Landscape Architecture, cultural character, art features, genre, the way of inherit and the connotation and quintessence of Chinese gardens. Secondly, they will explore plant culture and the relationship between aromatic plants and health, ecological ideology and ecological intelligence. Moreover, during the field trip, many typical cases of private gardens, emperor gardens and beautiful spots will be analyzed. In addition, students will be required to carry out specific design practice on the culture and art of Chinese gardens. To enhance the students’ independent exploration, some distinguished experts will be invited to give talks. The following 4 topics will be covered in the package:

 

 

II.Time and Venue

 

Time: July 4-24, 2017
Venue: School of Agriculture and Biology Building on Minhang Campus

 

 

III.Contents

a.Culture and history of Chinese gardens: Through field trips to Chinese gardens in Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou, the culture and history of Chinese gardens will be learned and understood.
b.Ecological thought in Chinese gardens: The ecological culture in Chinese gardens will be taught by Masters through lectures, the students will be introduced to the ecological wisdom of Chinese landscape architecture.
c.Plant culture and uses of Chinese gardens: Students will learn about and experience the plant culture and its application in Chinese gardens as well as the secret relationship between aromatic plants and health throughout the field trip.
d.Chinese garden design: Through a typical case study and design practice of Chinese gardens the students’ recognition of art, culture, plants and ecological thought will be promoted in order to convey the culture and art of Chinese landscape architecture.

 

 

IV.Eligibility

 

Graduate and undergraduate students who are majored in landscape architecture or any other majors related to LA, such as urban planning, architecture, ecology, horticulture. A total of 30 domestic and oversea participants will be recruited.

Professor Che is a doctoral supervisor and the Vice Dean of the School of Agriculture and Biology. His research areas include the education and research of landscape ecological planning and design, landscape evaluation and protection, as well as rural landscape.

Dr. Wang is an Associate Professor from the School of Agriculture and Biology. He has a multi-disciplinary background of landscape planning and design and architecture. His research areas are in the culture, history and practice of Chinese gardens. He has supervised more than 200 planning and design projects.
Associate Professor Dongqin Tang, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China
Dongqin Tang: Dr. Tang is an Associate Professor from the School of Agriculture and Biology. She has an interdisciplinary background of botany, biochemistry, and molecular biology. She has hosted many national programs on forest ecological systems, urban forests in Shanghai, flower selection, and the gene cloning of ACS.
Assistant Professor Dan Chen, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China
Dan Chen: Dr. Chen obtained her Landscape Planning and Design Ph.D. from the University of Florida. She is in charge of undergraduate courses including preliminary design, landscape planning and design. Her major research areas are ecosystem planning, ecological protection and restoration.
Assistant Professor Bingqin YU, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China
Bingqin Yu: Dr. Yu is a visiting scholar from the TU Berlin. Her research fields are theoretical research and practical sponge cities, urban community’s ecological recreation, planning and design of ecological community, Western modern history and practice of landscape.

 

 

VI.Fees

 

Tuition: 1000 RMB
Others: meals (~50 RMB/day) and transportation
The summer school will cover the costs of lecture materials, lodging (in SJTU student dormitory), and transportation for group activities.

 

 

VII.Scholarship

Amount: 1000 RMB/ person
Number: more than 80% enrolled participants
Scholarship covers the tuition fee
