On July 24, 2016, the international summer session project of the School of Agriculture and Biology with the duration of three weeks (From July 3, 2016 to July 24, 2016) Summer Session: package6 Chinese Landscape and Architecture was smoothly closed. The international summer session project attracted a lot of overseas students from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and etc. for participation, in which specialized teachers from the Department of Landscape Architecture and Engineering of the School of Agriculture and Biology gave lectures and guidance. Focusing on the themes including “the history and culture of Chinese landscape architecture”, “ecological philosophy in Chinese landscape architecture”, “plant culture and application in Chinese landscape architecture”, “design practice of Chinese landscape architecture” and etc., the course contents with a wide range of forms such as specialized cultural course, design practice studio, field investigation, visit to design company and etc. are set up.

Under the leadership of specialized teachers, the students from different subject fields such as landscape architecture, chemistry, biology, computer, social science, management, forest resource environment and etc. further deepened perception about the landscape architecture subject in two aspects including learning exchange and practical experience through field investigation in the botanical garden, comparison and appreciation of landscape architecture in Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou, collection and identification of plant varieties in Shanghai, atrium design of the School of Agriculture and Biology and etc. at the same time when they improved theoretical knowledge level.

What is worth mentioning is that the students felt humanistic features, design method and cultural connotation of Chinese landscape architecture and horticulture as well as historical accumulation of Chinese landscape architecture of long standing through field investigation in person. Meanwhile, it is a rare and commendable experience for the students who came to mainland China for the first time. It not only promoted and expanded their specialized field of view, but also made them intimately exposed to traditional Chinese culture. 

 

In the learning process lasting three weeks, the students completed graphic design of the atrium of the School of Agriculture and Biology through cooperation in groups, explained and demonstrated their respective achievements via academic report. Through elaborately summarizing what they have learned from study, with their modest attitude, they showed mental outlook that they study hard and make active progress. 

After the academic report was finished, the representative of the teachers giving lectures presented overseas students with the souvenirs for the 120th school anniversary of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and took a group photo together with them to mark the occasion. Through three-week learning in which teaching is given through lively activities, the students can’t wait to share their own unforgettable experience to friends and families around them, so that more people can get to know Chinese landscape architecture, get to know Shanghai Jiaotong University, and get to know China.
